With just two weeks to go until our exciting jewellery collaboration with London based designer, Alex Monroe, we thought we’d give you a preview of what’s to come at Evans with the new Alouette collection.

Alouette draws upon a dedication and love for nature, whilst paying homage to the glamour of the 1950’s that we all know and love at Evans HQ. The collection features natural forms and organic patterns inspired by the works of English textile designer, William Morris.

We chatted exclusively to Alex Monroe to grab an insight into his work, the collection and hear more about his designs.

Hi Alex. Tell our ladies a little bit about yourself and ‘Alex Monroe’ jewellery.

Ah, well. I’m 6 foot 4, 24 years old, and very handsome. I wish. Actually I’ve been making jewellery for 25 years now so I’m no spring chicken any more. It’s the only thing I know how to do. I have three lovely daughters and am married to Denise. I design and make every original piece of jewellery. I design at least two new collections each year which we sell at the London, Paris, New York and Tokyo fashion shows. It sounds glamorous but it’s blooming hard work. I love the time I get in the workshop best. That’s what I am; a jewellery maker.

When did you realise your love and talent for jewellery design and creation?

Oh, that’s nice to assume I have some. Sometimes I’m not so sure. I suppose it’s a progressive thing. I love making things, making anything, not just jewellery. And I think I’m continuously honing my skills so I’m not there yet. That’s probably what keeps it fascinating, always striving to do things a little better, always hoping for those elusive highs.

How does an Alex Monroe design come about, from start to finish?

Cor blimey! How long do you have? Here’s a condensed version:

1. Initial idea or inspiration (eg. The inevitable pain of love, or freewheeling on a bicycle on a spring morning); it’s usually a very broad theme.
2. Original research; museums, books, countryside, churches or whatever.
3. Draw up some ideas.
4. Develop your ideas into loose designs.
5. Get into the workshop and start making.
6. Take all the things you’ve made and construct them into pieces of jewellery.
7. Stand back and have a look. Does your original inspiration show through? And does everyone in the studio want to wear the pieces you’ve made. Are they desirable, fashionable and wearable?

Is there a story behind any of the Alex Monroe pieces from the main/Evans collection?

Everything has a story behind it. For the Evans collection we looked back a generation or two at the fuller figure, but we didn’t want to reference the unattainable glamour of Hollywood. We imagined a child watching her mother getting ready for a party in the 60’s or early 70’s. That intimate personal glamour. The smell of her perfume and carefully fastening earrings or a necklace. Some of the inspiration comes from William Morris imagery too. Furling curling leaves. I think we’ve retained that nostalgic sense of voluptuous glamour.

Finally, what’s next at Alex Monroe?

Oh my days. Lots. We’ve started the year running exhibitions in Paris, New York and Tokyo. I’m writing a book. New collections. Lots and lots. It makes me tired just thinking about it. But it’s all fun so I’ve a lot to look forward to.

Yesterday saw our much anticipated brand blogger event take place – a fun filled celebration of all things shape, Evans and Spring/Summer. With bloggers travelling through the snow from all around the country to meet up and preview some exciting new collections, it was our biggest and best blogger event to date.

Our bloggers were pampered with champagne and nibbles, as well as a team of hair stylists, make up artists and a professional photographer so they could dress up and strike a pose in the new season’s must haves.

Wearing their favourite pieces from our Scarlett & Jo, Collection, Live Unlimited and Alex Monroe ranges, our ladies enjoyed every minute of being thoroughly looked after.

All in all, a fabulous day of meeting new faces and catching up with some lovely blogging ladies – we’re already looking forward to seeing everyone again soon!

Colour Block Jumpers

Our colour block jumpers are ultra cosy with both V-neck and scoop neck finishes.

At Evans HQ, we can hardly believe that 2012 is coming to an end. It’s been a fantastic year of collaborations, patriotic celebration and it even saw the launch of our much anticipated Clements Ribeiro range. Take a trip down memory lane and check out the highlights of the year with us…

So where do we begin? We kicked off the year in style with seeing the Clements Ribeiro A/W12 collection at London Fashion Week ahead of their exclusive collection with us. We treated a selection of our bloggers to seasonal previews of the range for Evans, and started a series of posts to ensure the Evans woman knew exactly how to dress for her shape.

The month of May saw us win a Prima High Street Fashion Award in the 16+ category, in aid of Breakthrough Breast Cancer, a cause that Evans supports throughout the year. We then hopped over the pond to attend Full Figured Fashion Week with EvansUSA and report back on the latest plus size trends from New York, and celebrated the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee (not on a river float) with a series of fabulous offers and competitions.

Going back to our Shape Advisor roots this year, we also launched some exciting events to bring Evans to you. Starting with Plus North, we were at the event to spread the word on ‘Shape’ and to meet lots of our lovely shoppers and bloggers. We kicked off our ‘Style Your Shape, Shape Your Style’ roadshows in Birmingham, Sheffield and Manchester, with teams of shape specialists, a mini fashion show and advice sessions…

Finally, the latter half of the year saw our big flagship store move to Marble Arch, with Look magazine, along with the exclusive Swan by Clements Ribeiro Christmas collection, phew! A big thank you also goes to our Bloggers for Your Shape – Marie, Georgina, Rebecca and Ulrike – for the fantastic post series that has run on Fashion Fix, and to the fabulous Lisa Riley for her continued support for Evans throughout her successful Strictly spot.

Clements Ribeiro Swan for Evans returns for Christmas this week with another beautiful collection. Based on art deco city lights and 1920’s decadence, this collection is perfect for the Christmas party season.

Last night we rolled out the red carpet for our official launch party for the opening of our brand new Marble Arch store on London’s Oxford Street. We teamed up with Look Magazine to hold a reader event in store to showcase our new flagship store.

As well as having the opportunity to check out our new store layout and design, shoppers also had the chance to chat to designer duo Clements Ribeiro about their collections with Evans. Bloggers and shoppers loved asking the designers about what inspires the collections and how they feel about being the first plus size highstreet collaboration designers.

There were also limited edition goody bags to take away and a luxury nail bar, as well as fizz and macaroons to keep everyone going. A 20% discount on any purchases made on the night meant that the changing rooms were very busy.

Look photographers were also on the hunt for people to take part in their Street Style shoots, so lots of people were dressed to impress and got snapped.

How long have you been working for Evans?

I joined just over a year ago and started as the Central London Area Manager. I look after 26 stores across central London and Essex.

How did you come to be Area Manager for Evans?

I started my career in retail as a Christmas Temp and worked my way up to area manager. When I worked in store I loved helping customers, especially when customers came in with a particular occasion in mind and I was able to help them find a top-to-toe outfit that they loved wearing and made them feel great.

Being Area Manager means I still have the chance to help customers but in a different way. I help them by developing staff to be great Store Managers and Shape Advisors; this is a part of the job I really enjoy.

What are the best bits for you about working for Evans?

It’s definitely the people. My colleagues from stores and our head office staff have usually worked with Evans for many years and are truly passionate about the brand and, most of all, the customers. My longest serving member of staff has been working with Evans for 43 years.

I’m also very proud of the clothing we offer. I was an Evans customer before I started working here, and I’m still a customer today. I tend to wear Evans clothing most days!

What did you love about the old Evans Marble Arch store?

The location of the old store was fantastic. It was right in the heart of London near Marble Arch Station, so it was really central and had a great buzz. And I’m very pleased that the new store is literally moving across the road and we’re staying in such a bustling, vibrant area of London. But the best thing about the old store was the fantastic Shape Advisors who, luckily, are coming with us to the new store!

Tell us about your fondest memory and favourite experience at Evans?

My fondest memory was when I was a Store Manager and I took on a Christmas Temp to help in the busy run up to Christmas. She was absolutely brilliant, and she’s worked closely with me ever since and is now running one of our biggest, most popular Evans stores.

What are you looking forward to most with the new Evans Marble Arch store?

The store layout has been designed to be more focused on our customers’ needs and how they like to shop. The shop design will all be on one floor, making it easily accessible to all. Customers will be able to move throughout the store and to see the fantastic Evans product effortlessly.

The design will be very light and spacious, a real home from home environment. Hopefully customers will feel as comfortable and happy in our new location as we will.

Working with such busy stores, how do you cater for each individual customer?

We get so many different types of customers in our stores, many customers are from different countries and locations, they’re not just London-based shoppers. It great when they come into store and learn about Evans for the first time! Some of our Shape Advisors speak several languages so we can communicate and help as many of our overseas shoppers as possible and offer an even better, individual service.

Do you have lots of regular customers and how did they respond to the news of the store changes?

We have a lot of regular customers who have been shopping with us for years. They are so excited about our move, especially as it will be a store that has been designed around how they like to shop. They’re also very really looking forward to the opening weekend and the opportunity to attend our opening event the week after!

What are you doing to mark the opening of the new store, any special events?

We’re planning a long, opening weekend which we can’t wait for – they’ll be some special treats that includes some limited edition giveaways! We open for the first time at the end of September and then we have the opening launch event in collaboration with LOOK Magazine on the 27th September. The event will be from 6pm until 8pm and free for all to attend. It’s a great way to see all our collections and celebrate everything Evans is about. Our shape advisors will be on hand to talk to people who attend. There will be a goody bag with some little treats and the chance to speak to the fabulous designer duo, Clements Ribeiro, who have just launched their second collaborative designer range with us.

We really want to celebrate our new and improved flagship store, we can’t wait to show it off. We want to make sure all our fantastic customers can pop in and enjoy the celebrations with us!
