We have fashion insider Emily from Fashion Foie Gras guest blogging for us throughout London Fashion Week. Here are her thoughts on the new Beth collection. . .
Celebrities collaborating with fashion designers: It’s common now. We’ve seen it done dozens of times and the pairings just keep on coming. For years women 14+ watched as celebrities that wore size twos or fours sponsored clothing lines that could be worn by other women their own size. Who doesn’t remember the day when Karl Lagerfeld was outraged by H&M carrying his collaboration in any size over size 14. He believed "fat" women didn’t have a face in fashion. My oh my how times have changed! Karl now shoots plus sized models for magazines and has featured Crystal Renn (a face of Evans) in his Chanel Soho. And celebrity collaborations for women over size 14 - that’s changed too. Last year on July 9th when Beth Ditto launched a clothing line with Evans in the UK. Fat-shionstas, as they are now called, hailed the dawning of a new era. I, frankly speaking, still have never understood why designers do not realize that we now live in a world where the majority of women are considered "plus sized."
The important announcement today is that Beth Ditto has come back for round two with Evans. Today the most powerful department store in London, Selfridges, is even recognizing this huge clothing phenomenon by launching it exclusively in its store. Anita Barr, Selfridges Director of Womenswear had this to say on the collection: "Selfridges is proud to add to its strong high street edit with the new arrival of Beth Ditto at Evans. It’s a fantastic collection and we’re delighted to offer our customers both a greater range of product and a wider size offering."
So thanks to Evans and Beth Ditto for bringing together two wonderfully artistic talents to create a line of clothing for women to prance around in proudly! Grab your Amex ladies and hit the stores! I’ll see you in the dressing room!
Three shoppers queued outside the Marble Arch store at 9am to be the first to see Beth Ditto’s new collection. When we arrived at 9.30am the shop was packed with customers of all ages.
We asked three people what was in their shopping bags . . .
Marie Mjs, illustrator from France, ‘ I’m buying a black dress with batwing sleeves this floral dress, the navy and white polka dot dress and some leggings. I’ve been saving up for this range for months! ‘
Lauren Ding, blogger for Pocket Rocket Fashion from London, ‘ I like the navy and white polka dot dress and the black and red dress. I came down early because I knew there would be queues. ‘
Sarah Roberts, writer from London, ‘ I’ve tried a few things on but my favourite is the navy and white polka dot dress. I’m getting some new jewellery too. ‘
Our Marble Arch store has had a makeover! As Beth Ditto’s second collection for Evans is so beautiful, we had to make sure it wouldn’t get missed.
There are screens playing Beth’s cool video and shop staff have worked super hard to scatter postcards among the shoes and clothes as well as dress the mannequins in the new range.
And five minutes down the road, you can have a second look at the range as Selfridges have a pop up Evans shop for the next four weeks. You can also see Beth’s full range and mini film online at evans.co.uk. . .
