Nautical Stripes

10:00 AM

With the last of the snow washed away, wellies back in our wardrobes once more, and the imminent promise of new clothes to shop (did you catch the preview of our new collections and the Evans Shape Studio on our blog and Facebook?), we thought we’d turn our hand to the season’s coveted nautical trend once more.

The nautical trend is a failsafe, retro inspired, slightly 50’s look that we always favour for the Spring/Summer, and for good reason. Dramatic navy blue, letter-box red, clean cut white and livelier, lighter blues combine to create a stylish yet timeless look for any body shape.

With stripes, fabulous hems and both tailored and smart fits all on the menu, we picked out our top choices from the nautical range at Evans:

Apples elongate their shape by creating a vertical panel through the centre of their body. We’d recommend a simple white jersey top worn with the Navy Striped Cardigan. Stripes are key to the nautical trend and when paired with a block colour and open front fit, it looks fabulous on fuller middles. Add the Red Pleat Detail Square Toe Pumps and flat front leggings to complete the outfit.

For Busty shapes, draw attention to your shapely legs with Red Jeggings for a 50’s look. Opt for something darker hued like the Navy Stripe 2-in-1 Top to help minimise the upper body, and add chunky heels to balance the shape. Don’t forget a slick of red lipstick to finish the retro siren look!

If you’re an Hourglass, choose a top with a flattering neckline to accentuate your best assets. Flat fronted trousers or Navy Jeggings will keep your shape perfectly streamlined, and add the Chunky Bead Necklace to mimic your defined curves. Hourglasses should pop a pair of elegant heels on to elongate the legs too.

The nautical trend was made for Pear shapes. We’ll be rocking the nautical trend for Pears with the Navy Striped Jumper and Fitted for a Pear jeans. Adding a Pink Butterfly Scarf keeps the look feeling fresh and feminine, as well as helping to balance out your figure. Finally, add these gold Scallop Edge Earrings to accessorise and complete your look.

What are your favourite nautical pieces? Will you be rocking this trend? Let us know in the comments, we’d love to hear from you.

Introducing Alex Monroe

9:30 AM

With just two weeks to go until our exciting jewellery collaboration with London based designer, Alex Monroe, we thought we’d give you a preview of what’s to come at Evans with the new Alouette collection.

Alouette draws upon a dedication and love for nature, whilst paying homage to the glamour of the 1950’s that we all know and love at Evans HQ. The collection features natural forms and organic patterns inspired by the works of English textile designer, William Morris.

We chatted exclusively to Alex Monroe to grab an insight into his work, the collection and hear more about his designs.

Hi Alex. Tell our ladies a little bit about yourself and ‘Alex Monroe’ jewellery.

Ah, well. I’m 6 foot 4, 24 years old, and very handsome. I wish. Actually I’ve been making jewellery for 25 years now so I’m no spring chicken any more. It’s the only thing I know how to do. I have three lovely daughters and am married to Denise. I design and make every original piece of jewellery. I design at least two new collections each year which we sell at the London, Paris, New York and Tokyo fashion shows. It sounds glamorous but it’s blooming hard work. I love the time I get in the workshop best. That’s what I am; a jewellery maker.

When did you realise your love and talent for jewellery design and creation?

Oh, that’s nice to assume I have some. Sometimes I’m not so sure. I suppose it’s a progressive thing. I love making things, making anything, not just jewellery. And I think I’m continuously honing my skills so I’m not there yet. That’s probably what keeps it fascinating, always striving to do things a little better, always hoping for those elusive highs.

How does an Alex Monroe design come about, from start to finish?

Cor blimey! How long do you have? Here’s a condensed version:

  1. Initial idea or inspiration (eg. The inevitable pain of love, or freewheeling on a bicycle on a spring morning); it’s usually a very broad theme.
  2. Original research; museums, books, countryside, churches or whatever.
  3. Draw up some ideas.
  4. Develop your ideas into loose designs.
  5. Get into the workshop and start making.
  6. Take all the things you’ve made and construct them into pieces of jewellery.
  7. Stand back and have a look. Does your original inspiration show through? And does everyone in the studio want to wear the pieces you’ve made. Are they desirable, fashionable and wearable?

Is there a story behind any of the Alex Monroe pieces from the main/Evans collection?

Everything has a story behind it. For the Evans collection we looked back a generation or two at the fuller figure, but we didn’t want to reference the unattainable glamour of Hollywood. We imagined a child watching her mother getting ready for a party in the 60’s or early 70’s. That intimate personal glamour. The smell of her perfume and carefully fastening earrings or a necklace. Some of the inspiration comes from William Morris imagery too. Furling curling leaves. I think we’ve retained that nostalgic sense of voluptuous glamour.

Finally, what’s next at Alex Monroe?

Oh my days. Lots. We’ve started the year running exhibitions in Paris, New York and Tokyo. I’m writing a book. New collections. Lots and lots. It makes me tired just thinking about it. But it’s all fun so I’ve a lot to look forward to.

Don’t miss out on the Alex Monroe for Evans collection. Register your details here to be the first to know every update.

The Knitwear Update

8:00 AM

Covering colour block knits, knitted tunics and even a fabulously patterned range, knits at Evans are tailored to suit every shape and every occasion. Read on to learn how each knit can be styled especially to flatter and inspire your shape…

Colour Block Jumpers

Our colour block jumpers are ultra cosy with both V-neck and scoop neck finishes.

Soft-to-the-touch and available in a myriad of stunning hues, Apple shapes should go for a V-neck version and pair with straight leg coloured jeans to complete their look. Bustys and Hourglasses will really suit a vivid V-neck choice too, whilst Pears should layer a scoop neck knit with a printed scarf.

Knitted Tunics

We’ve got a fantastic selection of knitted tunics to ensure that you can keep warm throughout the remaining winter chill whilst looking feminine and stylish. Whatever colour palette you’re choosing to see the last of the winter in, our knitted tunics are great to wear with leggings and long boots.

Patterned Jumpers

Balance your silhouette with a patterned jumper if you’re a Busty or a Pear. Choose from simple knitted hearts or go all out with a studded heart motif, or you can even warm up the season with a daring animal print number.

Textured Jumpers

Textured jumpers feature brilliantly subtle horizontal designs, as well as tuck stitches and other unique knits. These are great for Pear shapes but will look equally good on other shapes if styled properly:

  • Apple: try wearing yours with straight leg jeans and a wedge heeled boot;
  • Hourglass: add a pencil skirt to balance the figure;
  • Busty: go for something a V-neck to show off the bust.

Last but not least, cardigans are the ultimate knitwear addition to your wardrobe. We’re loving open front choices with ribbed details to add a super cosy layer to our looks without being too bulky.

Don’t forget to use our shape calculator to find out which Evans body shape you are.

How to Wear: Tops

8:00 AM

Love wearing separates as much as we do? Learn how to make the most of your wardrobe with our stress-free guide to this season’s tops…

Start the week with a fabulously sleek, fitted and smart top for work. We love the Grey Moss Crepe Bubble Hem Top with its pretty mushroom grey colour palette that is understatedly feminine and perfect for the boardroom. The honeycomb neckline and bubble hem is ideal for Busty and Pear shapes. Wear with Black Bootcut Workwear Trousers and simple pumps.

Trend-led and inspired by the Seventies’, the Tile Print Pintuck Shirt is one of our favourites for a versatile choice that is great for the office. Smartened up with a tailored collar and flattering pintucks at the waist, this button-through top works especially well on Hourglass shapes when paired with wide leg trousers.

Fridays at work call for something floral, something chic and something comfy, and in steps the Floral Woven Front Top at your beck and call. We particularly love the versatility of this top, making it an ideal for office-to-bar looks. Just keep your heels under the desk ready for a 6pm change!

Last week, we asked our Facebook fans what their favourite leisurewear of choice was, and the answer was unanimous with yoga trousers topping the list. Refresh your winter evening attire with the Grey Lace Trim Sweater, a stylish and ultra soft cotton top. With a stunning lace trim down the centre of each arm, this is perfect for TV evenings with your feet up, ‘just in case’ unexpected visitors show up. ‘Oh this? Just something I threw on…’

Choose from a selection of our cosy Long Sleeve T-Shirts that are ideal for pairing with your favourite yoga trousers or leggings for resting up in. We love the long sleeve tees for layering with knits and tunics for an extra warm, weekend look too.

Make your wardrobe work a little harder for the weekend with fun, retro inspired motifs and prints. We love the Navy Spot Jersey Top for a cool, Fifties’ feel. Pair with black leggings and a red cardigan for the perfect trend-led look.

Finally, monochrome doesn’t have to be monotonous with the newest range of tops at Evans. To add personality and flair to your weekend look, we’ve added the Black Bird Print Jersey Top and Heart Motif Jumper to our wardrobe. Teamed with your favourite boots and jeans, weekend chic has never been more stylish or cosy.
