Stepping out in a new style trend can be scary – but there’s no need to worry as there are lots of fun, fabulous ways to get involved with spring/summer’s 1970s inspired look.
The 1970s look is often associated with disco diva outfits and wide flares but there are much more stylish options to start with if you are nervous about going retro.
These are our top 3 ways to wear the trend
(1) Office Chic
If you need a smart new addition to your working wardrobe then you can use 1970s inspired pieces to build the perfect office outfit. The ivory chiffon sleeve tunic is a sophisticated way to dip your toes into the trend and it looks especially good with a classic pair of black wide leg trousers. You can get away with going straight from the office to the bar if you add some statement jewellery like the chain tassel earrings and a stunning handbag like the sodamix studded bag. And you don’t even have to change your shoes in between as the two part heel strap sandals give you support as well as a boost with a mid-height heel and bandage style strap design.
(2) Night-time Glamour
With summer approaching it’s time to get colourful so you can get away with brighter items in your wardrobe. If you’re looking for something that will impress your friends on a night out then you’ll love some of the new 1970s inspired bold prints. The printed jersey tunic is guaranteed to help you make a dramatic entrance – you can’t fail to turn heads with the pyscadelic mix of purples, greens and blues. As it’s such a statement piece, all you need to finish the look is a pair of black cotton ankle leggings and classic peep toe block heel platforms. But you can make the look extra fierce with a python and bead ring.
(3) Casual Cool
If you simply need a versatile outfit for the weekend then the 1970s hippy style could help you build a beautifully unfussy yet flattering look. The 1970s style tribal print maxi dress can be dressed down for day with flats and dressed up for night with heels – unless you go for a pair of black sling back wedges that you could wear all day long. A black chiffon front cover up will keep you protected from spring breezes with and you could simply fold it up in your handbag if you got too hot. Evans engraved stack ring finishes the hippy chic look – it’s like five rings for the price of one!
Which is your favourite way to wear the 70s trend?
Would you like to be more glamorous without looking as if you’ve tried too hard? One of the experts at timeless paired down glamour was 1960s icon Jackie O. The first lady was famous for matching single colour schemes, over-sized sunglasses and the super-stylish shift dresses. Here is a guide to interpreting the look with Evans…
While the London swinging 60s meant super short mini skirts and bold floral and tartan prints, John F Kennedy’s wife set her own trend with simple lines, tailored suits, and big sunglasses.
This style icon’s classic look embraces a woman’s femininity and clothes in the style that she championed will help make all of us look and feel like we can take on the world.
Fitted A-line dresses, pearls and pillbox hats were the norm for the extraordinary, well-dressed President’s wife.
It’s all about less is more with this fashion theme so rather than mix and match lots of layers and accessories, the easiest way to re-create Jackie’s effortlessly chic style is to choose a few tailored items. This is great news for your bank balance as you just need to invest in key pieces rather than overhaul your wardrobe.
To get the Jackie O tailored look from Evans, simply start with a black spot prom dress. The flattering knee length and tie-waist detail will subtly show off your shape without flaunting too much flesh so you look lovely and ladylike. But you don’t need the budget of a stateswoman to afford it because this gorgeous monochrome dress is just £49.50.
Talking of great value for money, the mink oversized sunglasses are just £10 but they’ll make you look a million dollars. Think old-school Hollywood movie star meets pampered princess with gorgeous gold detail on the side of each arm.
All you need to finish the look is a pair of gorgeous day to night shoes like the block heel bow detail courts. They’re stylish but they won’t squeeze your feet and you’ll be able to wear them from breakfast to cocktail hour to look effortlessly chic for as long as you want.
Dressing up has never been so easy! Have you got a special occasion coming up so you can put the Jackie O inspired fashion tips into action?
Tell us about yourself and how you started blogging…
Honestly, I began blogging as a hobby while I was taking a break from a music graduate program I chose to leave. I needed some sort of outlet for my creativity and decided to begin a blog.
The blog was originally going to be more music focused, but instead I split my blog into a music blog (Mezzo Delicioso) and a fashion and beauty centred one (Mezzo Fashionisto). The blogging community is so amazing, I found friends and support that I never knew existed!
Tell us more about Mezzo Fashionisto…
Right now it is my personal fashion and beauty diary of sorts. I also write about issues I observe within the plus-size community. I have to emphasize the fact that my blog is more personal than most plus size fashion/fatshion blogs. Mezzo Fashionisto is truly an outlet for my thoughts and so from time to time the content may not be what you expect, but it is what is meaningful to me, and hopefully may be helpful to the reader.
Now, I hope to involve more of my song writing and music making into the blog, as well as include more beauty tutorials. I hope my lovely readers will find it intriguing. My readers are some of the most supportive individuals I have ever had the pleasure of communicating with. I love them dearly.
How did you get into plus sized modelling?
As a lover of the fashion and beauty industries I have always loved modelling, but I never thought I could be involved in front of the lens. From time to time when I would step in as a make-up artist, the photographer would ask me if I had considered art modelling or plus size modelling. I did some tests for some friends and it just sort of grew from there.
I do not consider myself a fully developed, full time plus size model. I don’t want to insult those amazing women that are models by profession and are dedicated to their work. I am a musician, first and foremost. However, if someone wants to use me and I like the concept, I am happy to perform.
What advice would you give to other aspiring models?
Get out there and test. Find photography students at a nearby school, or just use a friend that has some photography experience. That is the only way you can learn how to move in front of a camera. Also, be honest about your abilities and limitations. Every woman is not meant for every modelling job. Keeping yourself “together” is important. If you want to be a fit model, maintain those measurements and take care of your skin and hair.
What is your top tip for having body confidence?
Confidence is a concept that is not simple to attain or define. Self esteem is a personal journey that every person must take on their own, and they have to use whatever methods are available to work for them. If I had to pick one tip that helped me, it would have to be “fake it until you make it”. I held my head up high and took risks way before I was actually confident enough to do so. After some time, that confident air became my reality.
What are your top 3 favourite items on sale at Evans at the moment?
I love the trousers at Evans!
1. Tan Sateen Trousers
2. Tribal Extra Wide Leg Trousers
3. Black Drapey Utility Trousers
There are some gorgeous new folk and boho chic items this spring, but it can be difficult to know where to start with this look.
Fear not! You can dip your fingers (and necks, wrists and ears) into the trend with some exquisite pieces of fresh, new-season jewellery.
Not only is it a cost-effective way to try a new look with most pieces under £10, it’s a way to make life more cheerful this Spring with blues the colour of a warm Mediterranean sea, tribal patterns and wild animal shapes.
The new-season rings can help you brighten up your appearance with pieces like the bold round turquoise dome ring. They can help you feel more confident as you wear something like the python and bead ring for a special occasion. And you can get pieces that complement all outfits like the Aztec patterned band bracelet that matches everything.
Bangles come in dazzling colours and interesting embellishment. Evans new turquoise charm bracelet is a delicious mix of earthy brown and bright blue while the embellished bangle pack looks more enchanting with it’s mirror detail, stripe textures and a mix of rich and crisp colours.
Necklaces and earrings are the finishing touches to an outfit and a way of making it seem as if you’ve made an effort even if you’re wearing old clothes. Two gorgeous feather and charm necklaces will see you float up a new style league, one that deserves tons of compliments. The wing stud earrings are guaranteed to get you noticed and perfect if you have a special occasion coming up, while the hippy hoop earrings are more subtle and suit both day and night events.

Comedienne Ruth Jones has the rare skill of being able to light up every room that she enters. She’s always a dream to look at with classic cut dresses that fit her figure really well. And she can hold her own in any conversation because she oozes confidence.
Not many ladies would be brave enough to spar with James Corden but Ruth fought with him to get her own way on the script of the hit BBC comedy Gavin And Stacey.
This determination to fight for what she believes in earned her a Cosmopolitan Ultimate Woman Of The Year Award and her energy even lit up the grand banqueting house in Whitehall, Westminster, where Ruth collected the honour.
How does she do it? Well, she wears clothes that suit her shape. For a black dress similar to what the talented comedienne wore to the Cosmopolitan awards, check out the classic black maxi dress with a feminine jacket over the top. The black embellished crinkle cotton maxi will lengthen your figure so you look slimmer.
When it comes to shoes, Ruth shows that comfort is equally as important as keeping cool but she manages to multi-task and achieves both in a sublime pair of strappy sandals. You could do the same in evans ankle bar court shoes
And to inspire you to be brave, check out the sparkly snake ring . . . Wearing something so fierce on your finger should give you a confidence boost. Is Ruth an inspiration to you? Or are there other plus-size ladies you look up to? Tell us your fashion inspiration and we’ll suggest ways you can steal their style with evans clothing.
We are pleased to introduce you to Jade, the author of Jade by the Sea. Jade tells us about what inspires her to write and lets us in on her favourite pieces for Spring.
Tell us about yourself and how you started blogging?
My name is Jade Shackcloth and I love fashion. I started blogging when I physically couldn’t fit another dress in my wardrobe. I wanted to change my style and wear those items I never had the confidence to wear before. I love shopping, not necessarily buying but seeking new outfit inspiration or how to change an item I already own! I have a weak spot for anything polka dot, floral or sequinned and I’ll let you in on a secret, I never wear trousers!
Tell us more about Jade by the Sea?
Jade by the Sea started as a blog where I could write about things I dreamed of doing, such as becoming an interior designer or a fashion journalist. I never expected people to read what I was writing, let alone receive emails from other ladies saying I’ve inspired them! Writing Jade by the Sea has also made me realised I have more skirts and cardigans than the entire population needs! My blogging has helped me become more confident, I now don’t care if people think I shouldn’t wear a certain item or outfit. On the other hand, it’s wonderful to see what my readers think about my outfit or style.
What advice would you give to other aspiring bloggers?
Write about things that interest you and don’t be afraid to have an opinion. I don’t just write about fashion and beauty. I like to write about subjects close to my heart. After losing my left eye to cancer I regularly try to raise awareness on my blog. Don’t be scared and don’t worry what others might think. It took me some time to tell my family that I write a blog as I didn’t think they’d understand.
What are you most looking forward to about spring?
Easter! I’ve given up chocolate for lent and I’m doing quite well! Aside from that, I am looking forward to being able to wear a cardigan over my dress and not a bulky coat. It’s the most amazing feeling to walk out in the spring sun with just a cardigan on. Let’s not forget spring fashion! It’s when all the best floral prints come out and I love the nautical look.
What are your top 3 Spring/Summer items from Evans?
I’ve been sneaky and chosen four items, but every girl needs accessories!
This is such a versatile top but when I tried it on it’s much more like a tunic/dress and looks amazing with leggings. The monochrome print means you can wear this with anything. It’s smart enough for work and can be dressed down for a date or shopping trip.
I love red! Wearing a bright colour puts a spring in my step and makes others smile. This would be great for a date with the girls or your partner. It can go from day to evening with the help of the right accessories. Cinch the dress in with a tan or black belt and that’s one beautiful figure right there!
These shoes go with everything thanks to their colour. The bow adds a nice little touch and can really change what would otherwise be a plain outfit.
This bracelet is gorgeous and has the prettiest matching necklace too. This would go really well with the navy dress and add a pop of colour!
Now, to inherit some money so I can buy all of these gorgeous pieces! Which item is your favourite?
The full-length mauve nightie and t-shirt pyjama set, are in silky soft jersey material, luxurious, light and something you can lounge around in all day. Secondly, the mauve colour suits every skin tone. It’s feminine without being flashy. And finally, it gets better every time you look at it with subtle details like a lace trim around the neckline and the sleeves of both the nightie and the pyjama set. The nightie has a tie-detail at the waist and the pyjama set has a flattering v-neck design to give you some shape even as you sleep. The best news is that it’s available this week in evans stores and online.
What do you think? We promise you these pj’s are even more lovely when you feel them next to your skin!
Do you have an amazing mum? Or are you a mother yourself and dropping hints about what your family should choose for you on Mother’s Day? Evans has everything you need to make it a special day on Sunday 3rd April, Mothering Sunday!
All mums like pretty things so why not treat her to something beautiful like the butterfly print kimono tunic. Or show her how much you love her with a black rose printed dress. It’s got splashes of yellow to see her through spring in style and florals are so on-trend this season.
If you want a gift that will last her for a while then check out the black chiffon front cover up. It looks gorgeous over any outfit to protect against spring breezes but the lightweight material means you can fold it up in your handbag when the sun peaks through the clouds.
Or check out our impressive accessories range and splash out on something stunning she can wear every single day. We all need a good bag and the evans black barrel bag goes with everything and can be used from day to night. The flower and bead matching jewellery set is cute and colourful, which means it matches anything. Or get her something that will always be close to her chest – a black and white heart scarf.
We read your Facebook comments and agree, comedienne Dawn French is one stylish lady.
On International Women’s Day we asked you to tell us who you looked to for inspiration. And Dawn French, one half of the side-splittingly funny double act French and Saunders and the cheeky and charming Vicar of Dibley, was singled out for being talented and beautiful.
What’s fabulous about Ms French is that her look can be easily achieved with clothes found at evans.
When Dawn recently won a BAFTA TV fellowship for her talents, she collected the gong in a flattering black tunic top, wide-leg black trousers, pretty ballerina pumps and a big smile.
And so can you with an evans black sateen jacket, which subtly reflects the light to help you look dazzling like Dawn.
Evans has a brilliant selection of black trousers but for a style like Dawn’s we recommend the black linen mix trousers.
Your feet can stay comfortable but look cool with some black ballerina pumps and such an award-winning look requires some statement jewellery like the shell effect resin ring.
What do you think of Dawn’s style? Share your comments with us on evans Facebook page!
