Super-stylish fashion blogger LaCara recently took a behind the scenes trip to our Spring 2011 shoot and had a catch up with beautiful model Marquita Pring . . .watch out for exclusive behind the scenes videos coming soon . . .
How did you break into the industry?
I was 15 when I entered the modelling industry, I was always told that I should model, and I thought I had to be skinny in order to do so, but my family and friends supported me, so I went for it. My Mum and I went to a model casting at the mall, and they liked my look and from that point I flew out to Toronto and originally signed up with ‘ Wilhemina Models ‘, but I’m now currently signed with ‘ Ford Models ‘.
Do you get treated differently from straight-sized models?
No, not from my experience. I’ve never had a problem on a shoot with a straight-sized model. I think that ‘ plus-size ‘ models are still a taboo, and they really don’t know how to take us because, the plus-size industry is booming, but to them it’s still a relatively new thing. So, no I wouldn’t say I get treated differently, it’s just that the fashion industry is still adjusting to plus-size models.
What’s the best thing about being a model?
Definitely, the travelling. I love to travel, and I get to see the world, while doing something that I love, so it’s a win/win situation.
What advice would you give to an aspiring model?
Pursue your dreams! If you want to model, pursue it vigorously and you’ll see the results. Make sure you do your research, and really put yourself out there, and of course good luck!
Can you share a tip on how to pose?
Be confident and just be yourself! If the photographer asks for something different, then try something different, and be creative. The most important thing, is to feel comfortable with yourself, that way your confidence will shine through, and you’ll be amazing in front of the camera.
