Pocket Rocket Interviews Evans Model Ashley Graham

Ashley Graham in Make-Up at the Evans Photoshoot

Hi Ashley! Are you enjoying the Evans shoot today?

Absolutely, I love working for Evans - the atmosphere is so laid back and fun, and I just love the clothes

What are your favourite items from the shoot?

Well I love pretty much everything, but my favourite is definitely their camel-coloured waterfall jacket with a fake fur lining - it drapes beautifully and is so soft.

So apart from today’s shoot, have you had any exciting projects going on?

I recently walked for New York Fashion Week’s first ever plus size catwalk show, which was incredible. I was really honoured to have been a part of it and I was just amazed at the amount of press it got. I couldn’t believe how many journalists from big fashion magazines turned out to see it. I really loved the clothes themselves as well, which was great.

I also have a Bust Magazine editorial coming out in December, which I’m so pleased with - you know, it’s not a typical "naked plus girl" editorial. I was given amazing, avant-garde clothes to wear - it’s about the fantastic clothes and not just the body, which I think is amazing.

Having walked at NYFW, what are your tips for Spring/Summer fashion?

I am a huge fan of the pastel colours seen on the catwalks - the corals and greens. I wear a lot of black, but I can’t wait to update my wardrobe with S/S 11’s colour scheme.

Since you’re one of the best plus size models around, I have to ask: Do you have any tips for creating the perfect model pose?

Oh wow! practice! I practice a lot. Usually in the mirror at home I practice poses, or little jumps. It helps to understand what angles and poses make you look your best. I also read magazines and look at editorials for inspiration. And my best friend is Crystal (Renn), who is incredible - sometimes I call her up and ask for advice, like "how did you do that pose?"

One last question Ashley - how did you get started modelling?

I’m from Nebraska, and was scouted in a shopping mall at the age of 12. Even then, I was 5’9", about a US12-14 and had breasts - I was already a woman really. So I’ve never been under any real pressure to be thin, I’ve always been curvy.

My Day on the Inside - at the Evans’ Photoshoot

17:22

Fashion blogger Pocket Rocket, aka Lauren Darling, went behind-the-scenes at the Evans photoshoot and this is what she saw:

One of the things I love about blogging is that I can talk about fashion without actually being part of the industry itself. To be honest I find it all quite scary! But this week Evans invited me down to their photo-shoot for the Christmas campaign and I just couldn’t say no. Thankfully everyone was completely lovely and I had a wonderful time!

Evans have commissioned the illustrator Gary Fernandez who will illustrate and create props over the top of the photos. The idea is for something magical and completely unique. Having seen his work, I am very excited for the collaboration!

Ashley and Quinn were having heaps of fun while in front of the camera - at one point, Ashley got her Beyonce on to Single Ladies - and the shots looked fantastic. The Evans team take the time and effort to understand exactly what’s going on in the high fashion world, and bring that to Evans - but in a way that won’t alienate their core customers. I really got the sense of balance that the team were trying to achieve, as they value their customers of all tastes and ages.

Once the photos had been reviewed, selected ones were printed out and it was decided which ones would be best to use in conjunction with Fernandez’ designs.

I can’t wait to see what they come up with!

Think Pink. . .

It’s Breast Cancer Awareness month and Evans hopes to raise as much money as possible for this important cause.

Proceeds from the sale go towards Breast Cancer Care. Move over boring black - pink is where it’s at this month!

Wave goodbye to Ugly Betty and say Toodle Pip to Desperate Housewives as Mad Men is the TV drama that’s scooping up all the awards this season.

The Sky One show’s won an Emmy and a Golden Globe this year and the programme’s actress Christina Hendricks wins our seal of approval for her feminine fashion sense.

Christina, who plays seductive office manager Joan Holloway in the US TV drama about a booming 1960s ad agency, successfully pulls off night-time glamour in a black lace top, playsuit and a maxi dress.

Meet our Breakthrough Breast Cancer T-Shirt Winner

10:44

Congratulations to Jing Liang! The Evans team were super impressed with the entry she submitted in our Breakthrough Breast Cancer charity t-shirt design competition. Her award winning t-shirt will be available in stores and online throughout October and proceeds of its sale will be donated to Breakthrough Breast Cancer. Find out what inspired her in this mini-interview.

What made you decide to enter the competition?
Being able to use my skills for a good cause is a very rewarding though, so entering the contest was not a hard decision to make. Not to mention, the opportunity to design for Evans is too exciting to pass by!

What inspired your design?
My artistic process is never in a linear manner; it’s like a tornado that engulfs all around it to create a new entity. This may seem unrelated at first but due to the constant downpour of precipitation in my city, the idea was sparked by the weather "If birds fly low, expect rain and a blow". The fluidity and control of birds in flight inspired my concept of feminine confidence. I designed for the ladies who have courageously fought breast cancer; I wanted to support them through a design that encourages feminine empowerment.

Have you ever won anything like this before?
This would be the second time I have entered and won a garment based graphic design contest. The first time was when I had the honour to co-design the jackets of the 2010 Vancouver Paralympics flag holders. The designing venture was quite different from the Evan’s contest because of the different market and purpose. However, the experiences are not that different, both are exhilarating for sure!

How are you going to make the most of the prize?
With so much amazing clothes available at Evans, I am going to make a little wardrobe revamp and redefine my personal aesthetics.

What item of clothing is on your autumn wish list?
Now, you are just giving me a hard time by making me pick a few! I have been on a hunt for a heavy weight terry knit boyfriend jacket with over sized patch pocket, in either navy or beige, and embellished with rustic gold buttons. Of course it doesn’t end there. It will be wonderful to have a woven wide crew neck slouch shirt with roll back cap sleeve paired with a pair of wool loose fit high-waist pleated trousers. Psst, maybe a pair of heels from Chie Mihara too.

Beth Ditto walks for Jean Paul Gaultier

17:10

Beth Ditto was the main feature of Jean Paul Gaultier’s show at Paris Fashion Week. Ditto, the voluptuous Evans designer and Gossip frontwoman, opened and closed the event describing the experience as both "amazing and frightening".

This is just one more example in a recent series of events where size zero models have been declared very last season and curvy girls have proudly stood in the spotlight.
