Glossy magazines have never exactly been welcoming to plus size women, but it looks like things are finally changing, at least in Italy. Vogue Italia has just launched a new section to the Vogue.it website – Vogue Curvy.
The new capsule site is available in Italian and English, and is dedicated entirely to the curvier woman. It’s not entirely plus size (the featured celebrities so far are America Ferrera and Christina Hendricks – neither of whom are over a size 14) but it’s definitely a step in the right direction, bringing the fuller figure into the limelight and opening up the world of high fashion to a wider audience.
It’s early days and clearly the team are still finding their feet (not sure about blog post about a ‘dessert-themed’ hotel suite for women with a sweet tooth!) but this is definitely one to watch with interest!
Here’s a sneak peek at some of the fabulous styles from our forthcoming Spring Catalogue. It’s full of essential new season looks, from tribal to floral and peach pieces to prom dresses, as well as evans fantastic new swimwear. Pick up your copy at evans stores from mid-March – get yours before they’re gone!
We’ve just seen this gorgeous new range of vintage-inspired dresses from Ruby Belle and we’ve seriously fallen in love. The vibrant, summery prints are just gorgeous – from tropical flamingos to chic sailboats and of course, Spring’s essential, florals.
These dresses are fitted over the bust and waist and have full A-line skirts, making them feminine, stylish, and heaven-sent for curves. We’re not sure if we’ll prefer rocking them with heels and red lips for a retro pin-up look, or teaming them with plimsolls for cool daytime style. Either way we can hardly wait for them to arrive at evans in April!
Build a great Spring outfit around this cowl-neck dress, and get in on two big trends with its fresh flower print and nautical stripes. Layer the dress up with an on-trend denim shirt and black leggings, and a pair of simple black canvas pumps are a stylish daytime footwear option. Accessorise with a super-sweet piece of jewellery like this star and heart charm bracelet, and a feminine bag in one of Spring’s must-have pastel shades is the ideal finishing touch.
This simple outfit is a super stylish option for day or night. Team this grey dress with cotton zip jacket and black tights or leggings. These flat, suede boots with lace-up back add interesting detail, and the studding across the front is right on trend. Great accessories really pull this outfit together, and the matching leopard print in the bangle and cluster necklace gives the outfit an elegant, polished feel.
You’d think I’d have more important things to worry about than my ankles, but they’re one of my least favourite body parts. Maybe it’s down to the episode of Friends where Rachel reads the list the boys have written about her pros and cons – “I do not have chubby ankles!” – but I’ve always been conscious of the fact I can’t wear ankle straps without turning my legs into tree trunks.
With that in mind, cuffed shoes present something of a challenge. But I think it’s one that can be overcome.
Half the problem I have with regular ankle strap shoes is that they’re too tight, digging in and resulting in a fleshy overhang. Cuffed shoes, which sit slightly lower onto the foot, are much easier to wear but still provide the same support. Evans shoes are more generously cut, so I wouldn’t have the digging-in problem. Plus, they’re hot pink. And I do love a bit of hot pink!
The best thing about shoes is they always fit no matter how much your weight fluctuates, which is perhaps why I always gravitate towards the boldest, most ostentatious offerings available. These fit the bill perfectly. I’d team them with grey opaque tights and a bright dress, but for less adventurous souls, they’d look amazing poking out from under a pair of black / grey wash jeans, especially skinnies.

How did you get into buying?
I have always had a real passion for fashion so when an office job came up working in a buying office for a handbag and accessories company I jumped at the chance. This gave me a greater insight into the world of buying and then decided to pursue it as a career. I got a Buying Assistant job in London and put myself through a Buying and Merchandising course at London College of Fashion and have worked my way up from there.
What are the best and worst things about being a buyer?
The best is the thrill you get from seeing people wearing your designs and having the opportunity to travel the world doing a job you love
The worst is the frustration when one of your designs doesn’t sell
Where do you get your inspiration from?
Inspiration comes from everywhere, you find you are always thinking of fashion, from celebs, magazines even someone on the tube can trigger an idea! Also we pay great attention to the designers and the catwalk shows. It is up to us to filter the high end fashion designs into something wearable for our customers to love and enjoy.
What gorgeous lingerie is Evans planning to bring in over the next few weeks?
The range is heading into a very Boudoir Vintage feel and colours are very pastel with corals and peach being trimmed with black lace. We also have some amazing control pieces which offer a smooth silhouette creating curves not hiding them!
How do you relax at weekends?
I have just joined a gym however would not call that relaxing at the moment!!!
I love to shop however concentrate on beautiful things for my house rather than my wardrobe at the weekends.
Seeing the street style photos of biker jackets inspired me to create some outfits around the look using some of the clothes you can currently buy online and in Evans stores.
Everyone knows leather looks great with denim, so that’s my first look. If you’d rather play it safe, this is a timeless, easy to wear outfit that has been lifted with the addition of some lace inserts on the t-shirt (lace is the Spring / Summer trend to look out for) and a shiny silver bag that stops the look from being too grey. Don’t be scared of jeggings – if you treat them as a warmer alternative to tights, they have real ‘wardrobe glue’ potential, especially in cold weather!
For my second outfit, I wanted to do something a bit different. Designers always mix unexpected fabrics and textures on the catwalk, and I wanted to give that a go in a more wearable way. I love the way boho dressers like Kate Moss will throw a leather jacket over a flippy little dress, so that’s what I tried to recreate. I paired the same jacket with the red floral dress everyone had their eye on at the Spring / Summer preview (it’s so much nicer in real life!) The outfit is completed with thick tights, studded shoes and a bold teal coloured bag, and some clashing bangles tie everything together. I’d wear them all on one arm, with the black in between the thinner silver ones to bring out the reds and pinks of the dress.

One of our evans designers has just got back from New York Fashion Week – seeing as we couldn’t go with her, she’s brought us the next best thing. She shares her story of A-list celeb-spotting in Manhattan, and reports back on the hottest trend from the catwalk and streets of New York City. We love the street style images she’s brought back – it’s so great to see cold-weather outfits that are stylish and warm.
And as for bumping into Hollywood movie-star Keanu Reeves, I for one certainly wouldn’t have been able to keep my cool! Sounds like an amazing trip, and with the catwalk and street-style images, we’ve got all the inspiration we need to layer up New York style this Spring.
